OpenAI Revamps ChatGPT Plans to Challenge Anthropic in Coding Race: What’s Changing?

Outlook Business Desk

OpenAI ChatGPT Subscription

OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT subscription priced at $100 per month, designed to support intensive coding tasks. The plan focuses on users who need longer and more demanding Codex sessions, positioning it as a premium offering for advanced workflows.

Codex Usage Boost

The company said in a post on X that the plan offers five times more Codex usage than Plus, with a limited-time boost of up to ten times until May 31, helping users handle more complex and ambitious coding tasks.

Pro Features Access

The $100 Pro subscription continues to include all existing Pro features, including access to the exclusive Pro model along with unlimited use of Instant and Thinking models.

Plus Plan Changes

The company said it will discontinue the Codex offer for Plus users from today and adjust limits to allow shorter but more frequent sessions spread throughout the week instead of extended usage in a single day.

Pricing Structure

The company continues to offer multiple tiers, including a $20 Plus plan for regular use, an $8 Go plan, a free tier and an existing $200 Pro option, giving users flexibility based on their level of usage and requirements.

Pricing Match Strategy

With these changes, ChatGPT’s pricing structure now closely resembles that of Anthropic, which offers a 5x usage tier at $100 per month and a 20x option for users on its $200 monthly plan.

Coding Market Strategy

Meanwhile, reports suggest OpenAI has triggered a ‘code red’ response to counter Anthropic’s growing hold in coding tools, shifting focus towards professional products while pausing or shutting down several experimental projects.

Superapp Development Plan

On the other hand, OpenAI is also building a desktop ‘superapp’ that will combine ChatGPT, Codex and the Atlas AI browser, aiming to create a unified platform where users can seamlessly handle conversations, coding tasks and browsing within a single interface.
