WhatsApp has officially ended support for several outdated Android and iPhone devices on June 1, 2025, due to minimum OS requirements not being met.
iPhones running below iOS 15.1—like iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus—will no longer support WhatsApp from this date.
WhatsApp has also stopped working on Android phones running below version 5.1. This includes Samsung Galaxy S4, LG G2, Huawei Ascend P6, Moto G (1st Gen), Motorola Razr HD, Moto E (2014),HTC One X phones.
Meta had originally planned this update for May 5 but extended the deadline to June 1 to give users more time to prepare.
WhatsApp ends support for older devices to ensure better performance, security and new features. Outdated phones can’t keep up with updates like encryption, video calls and UI upgrades. This shift helps WhatsApp maintain a smooth, secure experience for over 3 billion users.
Users affected by the WhatsApp update have a few options. Upgrading to a phone running iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 ensures continued access. Some older iPhones, like the 6s or SE (1st gen), can update to iOS 15.8.4. Alternatively, messaging apps like Telegram or Signal may still work .
WhatsApp also advised users to back up their chats and media before losing access to the app on older devices.
Apple data from 2024, reported by several reports shows only 5% of active iPhones still run iOS 15 or earlier, indicating limited disruption in developed regions. Most users already meet WhatsApp’s new requirements. However, the update could affect more people in areas with slower smartphone upgrade cycles.
