Outlook Business Desk

Copilot WhatsApp Exit

Microsoft has confirmed that its AI chatbot Copilot will stop working on WhatsApp from January 15, 2026. Users would have an opportunity to continue using the bot on other supported platforms.

Smooth Transition

Microsoft said it is taking steps to ensure a smooth transition, so users can keep accessing Copilot on mobile, web, and PC after WhatsApp support is discontinued.

Chat History Warning

WhatsApp conversations were “unauthenticated,” the company said, meaning chat history cannot be transferred automatically. Users should export their chats before January 15, 2026 to save any important data.

Policy Change Reason

Meta revised its Business API policy, prohibiting all third-party AI chatbots except Meta AI, citing increased server load and the need for tighter platform control as the main reasons.

Copilot History

Copilot has been on WhatsApp since late 2024. Microsoft said it takes pride in its impact, but the updated policy now requires the chatbot to leave the platform.

Meta AI Priority

With all third-party chatbots removed, Meta AI will be the sole AI assistant on WhatsApp, likely boosting its usage and strengthening the platform’s AI ecosystem.

Ad Revenue Strategy

Meta confirmed that conversations on Meta AI will be used to show personalised ads, meaning increased AI usage could lead to higher ad revenue for WhatsApp.
