Instagram has launched its Map feature in India, allowing users to explore location-tagged posts, reels, and stories. Users can also share their last active location with selected friends, with full control over privacy settings.
The Map feature lets users explore posts, reels, and stories tagged at different locations. It provides an interactive way to see trending spots, track friends travel updates, or check out popular cafes in any city.
Instagram highlights that the Map offers a lightweight and engaging way to connect. Users can interact with friends content on the Map while tracking updates from favourite creators and exploring trending locations in real time.
A constant indicator atop the Map displays whether a user’s location sharing is active or if device location services are disabled. Additionally, a reminder appears below the profile photo in the Notes tray for clarity.
Instagram also explains the difference between tagging a location and sharing live locations. Profile photos no longer appear on tagged content in the Map, and users are reminded that tagging does not show their real-time location.
When tagging a location in a story, reel, or post, Instagram now shows a preview of how it will appear on the Map. This helps users control how their tagged content is displayed to friends and followers.
Users can adjust Map settings anytime, including turning location sharing on or off. Only mutual followers can view shared locations, ensuring privacy and giving users complete control over who sees their activity.
Once enabled, a user’s location updates each time Instagram is opened and disappears after 24 hours unless the app is reopened. The Map ensures timely sharing while protecting user privacy through temporary updates.
Instagram uses three icons to show location sharing status: a blue arrow for active sharing, a red dot when sharing is disabled, and an orange triangle if the app lacks necessary location permissions.
