On April 12, users across India reported issues while making payments via Unified Payments Interface (UPI), including GPay,Paytm and PhonePe along with the several banks platforms.
According to DownDetector, a platform which tracks real-time outages, complaints about UPI transaction failures began surfacing around 11:26am and peaked at 11:40am, with over 2,200 users flagged issues.
''National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is currently facing intermittent technical issues leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused,” NPCI said in a post on X.
Users faced issues on third-party apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, as well as banking apps such as SBI, ICICI, and HDFC. The disruptions affected a wide range of users trying to make UPI transactions, causing inconvenience across both payment apps and banking platforms.
Social media platforms became a place to outpour frustration. Users have expressed their anger online as some stuck without cash. They demanded more reliable systems and zero downtime for essential services like UPI, highlighting the critical role of digital payments in daily life.
Several users shared personal stories about the challenges of not having cash during the UPI outage, stressing the importance of carrying cash as a backup. Memes and reactions about the situation quickly trended across social media platforms.
As of now, NPCI has not shared a specific timeline for the full restoration of services. However, they assured users that updates will be provided as soon as order is restored, and teams are actively working on resolving the issue.
This is the third UPI glitch in less than a month. Users and experts are questioning the reliability of digital payments during peak hours.
