iphone maker Apple has announced that John Ternus will take over as chief executive in September, succeeding Tim Cook after years of consistent leadership. Ternus, known for leading hardware engineering, now steps into one of the most powerful roles in global technology.
Michael Scott became Apple’s first chief executive from 1977 to 1981, stepping in to oversee operations as the young founders focused on innovation. He built organisational structure, managed manufacturing, and guided the company through its early business challenges.
Mike Markkula, Apple’s early investor and chairman, served as chief executive from 1981 to 1983 and helped stabilise the company in its early years. Alongside leading the business, he contributed to product development, including software for early computers.
John Sculley joined Apple from Pepsi, where he served as a marketing executive and later president. He served as chief executive from 1983 to 1993. During his tenure, a leadership clash with co-founder Steve Jobs over the company’s direction led to Jobs leaving Apple in 1985.
Meanwhile, Michael Spindler served as Apple’s chief executive from 1993 to 1996 during a turbulent phase marked by declining market share and pricing pressures. Misjudged demand and operational challenges led to dissatisfaction among investors and customers, eventually leading to his exit.
Gil Amelio became Apple’s chief executive from 1996 to 1997 when the company was in financial distress. He cut costs, shut projects and reduced the workforce significantly. During his tenure, Apple acquired NeXT, founded by co-founder Steve Jobs, marking a key turning point.
Steve Jobs served as Apple’s chief executive from 1997 to 2011 after the company acquired NeXT and revived its fortunes. He led the launch of products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, transforming industries and consumer technology worldwide.
Tim Cook served as Apple’s chief executive from 2011 to 2026 after Steve Jobs’ death and led the company into a new phase of growth. He strengthened global operations, expanded the services business and helped Apple become one of the world’s most valuable firms.
