Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new artificial intelligence-powered encyclopaedia built by his company xAI. It aims to rival Wikipedia by delivering faster, more factual, and less politically biased information online — as Musk describes it.
Grokipedia is built on xAI’s conversational model Grok, which powers Musk’s platform X (formely twitter). The AI generates and updates content in real time, ensuring quicker responses and continuously refreshed, data-driven information for users.
At launch, Grokipedia features over 8,00,000 entries, far fewer than Wikipedia’s six million English articles. However, xAI emphasised this is an early version, expecting massive expansion as the AI evolves.
Musk called this the 0.1 version of Grokipedia, saying version 1.0 will be ten times better. He claimed even the current version performs better than Wikipedia, signalling his ambitious long-term vision.
Grokipedia differs from Wikipedia’s community-based model by depending entirely on automation. Instead of volunteers writing and editing articles, Grokipedia’s content is created and refined by artificial intelligence with very limited human participation.
Musk believes AI-based editing eliminates ideological bias and bureaucratic interference, allowing Grokipedia to prioritise verified facts. He says the platform is designed to serve as a more objective and transparent knowledge source for users.
Many Grokipedia articles closely resemble Wikipedia content, with some nearly identical, The Verge observed, raising early doubts about xAI’s ability to maintain originality and uphold ethical standards in AI-generated information.
Meanwhile, Wikipedia’s open, community-driven system remains widely trusted, allowing millions of users to refine and improve content collaboratively. Despite occasional inaccuracies, its transparency and inclusivity continue to make it the internet’s most credible reference source.
