Elon Musk claims that his AI chatbot, Grok, accurately predicted all the winners of this year’s Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.
In a past seminar, he stated, “The right metric for intelligence is likely the ability to predict the future.” He made this remark before the Oscars, now he points to Grok’s accurate predictions as evidence supporting his view on AI’s foresight.
Grok3, the newest version of Musk’s AI chatbot from xAI, was unveiled on February 18, 2025. Promoted as an advanced AI model, it aims to expand the limits of computational intelligence and creativity. Compared to earlier versions, Grok3 features superior natural language processing, deeper contextual awareness, and enhanced reasoning skills.
The name "Grok" comes from Robert Heinlein’s sci-fi novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it means deep, intuitive understanding.
Grok’s accurate Oscar predictions have sparked debate over AI’s ability to foresee human decisions. Predicting in entertainment poses a challenge due to subjective human judgment. Some experts see Grok’s success as a breakthrough others believe it was mere coincidence.
Despite excitement over Grok’s predictions, doubt remains. Critics argue AI lacks human intuition, and film awards involve subjective factors. Concerns have also been raised about the transparency of Grok’s process, as Musk has not disclosed how it reached its conclusions.
The 97th Academy Awards took place on March 10, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate cinematic excellence and recognize the finest achievements in film.
