The Power Of I 2018

More Power To Them

The truism that if one can succeed in India, then one can succeed anywhere in the world is not bereft of merit as it is still not easy to do business here

The Power of India flows from many different things — our heritage, our diversity and our ingenuity. But in this rapidly evolving world, it is the spirit of entrepreneurship, the ability to push against all odds that steers you ahead. It is this fighting spirit that has defined India’s business landscape. That’s what has shaped most of our achievements globally and that is what will shape India’s destiny in the future.

Despite the overwhelming role of the government for the first 44 years after Independence, and then a more liberal touch for the next 27 years, many Indians still struggle for basic amenities such as education, housing and healthcare. It’s a pity that even after 71 years of Independence, most of our development indicators are still subpar. If there is anything that gives us hope, it’s the indefatigable Indian entrepreneur.

Many who have succeeded need to be lauded as their feat has been achieved under very tough circumstances. Outlook Business’ annual edition of The Power of I is only a small showcase of such entrepreneurial wins. The truism that if one can succeed in India, then one can succeed anywhere in the world is not bereft of merit as it is still not easy to do business here. In this year’s edition, we are delighted to present six inspiring companies that our reporting team has picked. The companies featured range across manufacturing, technology, exports and consumer brands. There is even a cricket equipment manufacturer which has established itself as a world leader in its niche.

Of all the stories, the most inspiring is that of the husband-wife duo from Aurangabad who co-founded Grind Master Machines. They account for 25% of India’s machine tool exports and their story is, indeed, one of grit and ingenuity. Indian manufacturing has produced very few world-beating companies and even though they are relatively small in size, they do rank up there. Also, in this edition, we have upstarts such as B9 Beverages and Rossell Techsys. They have come out of virtually nowhere and are getting noticed for their innovative offering. We hope you enjoy reading all the stories in this special edition.
