Big Idea

An artsy affair

Now you can pick and choose works of art by a wide range of designers and artists across India with the World Art Community

In the hope of creating a marketplace for artists and designers, Shobhit Arora, an alumnus of IIT-BHU, thought of going ahead with the idea of the Gurgaon-based WorldArtCommunity. “I realised how creators of art are desperately searching for ways to fund their passion,” says Arora. His website offers artists and designers a space to sell their products online. It currently has around 4,000 unique products under categories such as apparels, home décor, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery and accessories. A commission of 10% is charged from its 360 sellers, who receive orders from all over India.

“Most of the buyers purchase multiple products but many artists have a single style. Hence, we have multiple artists,” adds Arora. The company follows a lean inventory model and does not warehouse any of the goods. “Our artists don’t produce in bulk and hence we don’t restrict them by locking their inventory,” says Arora. The company is currently providing logistics support through Blue Dart across the country. Arora is now looking for more investments to improve the technology and marketing and hire more employees.

New custom creation services are likely to come up in the apparel wear section. The only issue that the company faces is getting artists on board. Apart from further plans of delivering products abroad, the company is planning to reach out to more artists.
